Committee Info

Description

Hello delegates, and welcome to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Our Committee serves as one of the most vital organs for making foreign policy in the country. Our jurisdiction stretches from deciding the boundaries of the United States, to interacting with foreign governments and the UN as it pertains to making and enforcing treaties, and in the last resort, we are responsible for intervention abroad and declarations of war. In the words of Chairman John Kerry, “the Senate Foreign Relations Committee has historically been a place for bipartisanship – a place where both parties and all members come together to advance America’s interests in the world.” At the moment, hearings are being held on topics as diverse as the road ahead in Afghanistan, and defense trade cooperation with the United Kingdom and Australia. Some issues that have been explored in the recent past in Committee hearings have been the effect of climate change on Third World nations, policy options in respect to the ongoing economic and civil rights crisis in Zimbabwe, and maritime disputes in East Asia.

Chaired by former Democratic Presidential candidate Senator John Kerry, and with influential members such as Ranking Member Richard Lugar and Christopher Dodd, a seat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee is truly one of the most coveted committee positions in the Senate. Some of the more important subcommittees are the Subcommittee on East Asian and Pacific Affairs, and the Subcommittee on International Development and Foreign Assistance, Economic Affairs, and International Environmental Protection.

Hi! My name is Andrew Moelis, and I am a senior in the School of Arts and Sciences. I’m a history major, with an informal concentration in the Ancient Near East, and an Urban Studies minor. I’ve been a member of Model Congress for four years now, and was a participant in Model UN in high school. I’m from Greenwich, CT, and attended Rye Country Day for high school. Aside from Model Congress, I play tennis, and generally choose to sit around doing nothing else, and that makes up the majority of my admittedly busy day. Should anyone need help writing their bill, or if they have questions about the conference or the school in general, I would be happy to help out, and can be reached at andrewrm@sas.upenn.edu. I hope you all have a fantastic winter break, and I’m excited to meet you all and get started on solving all of the pressing world issues our Committee should be able to discuss in our weekend of work at the conference!

Hi, my name is Jordan Moelis! My bio-blurb will come soon. I can't wait to meet you all!
