Committee Info
The House Judiciary committee has jurisdiction over measures that relate to anti-trust law, courts and judges, constitutional issues and amendments, civil rights and liberties, immigration, patents, trademarks and copyrights, interstate compacts, and appointment of representatives. The committee is not a court or administrator of justice; however, the committee has the broad responsibility of overseeing federal courts, administrative agencies, and federal law enforcement entities, who may be identified as the true “administrators” of justice.
This Committee has the unique task of oversight over an entire branch of our government, the Judiciary. The House Judiciary Committee acts in a way to ensure justice by pushing bills and amendments that better enable our system of government to protect our rights and best serve the citizens of the world. Having oversight over the Judiciary branch is a heavy charge, and it is not, and should not, be taken lightly. For example, with respect to the Patriot Act, this committee had to analyze the effects of such an Act on the Bill of Rights and the United States’ protection of civil liberties. In short, this Committee serves as the wise guardian to the American people.
To get a more specific idea of what this committee does, look at examples of legislation and procedural documents such as the Federal Rules of Evidence and the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure which aim to protect civil rights and liberties in judicial proceedings. During the 110th Congress, the Committee passed numerous bills that include the Preserving United States Attorney Independence Act of 2007 and the Second Chance Act of 2007.
The Committee is chaired by the Congressmen John Conyers Jr. (D, Michigan) with Congressmen Lamar Smith (R, Texas) serving as ranking member. There are 39 members of the Committee.
