Committee Info

Description

Hello Representatives and welcome to the U.S. Senate Committee on Armed Services. The Armed Committee is responsible for the funding and oversight of the U.S. Armed Forces, the Department of Defense, as well as significant portions of the Department of Energy (particularly nuclear energy and its pertinence to national security). The Armed Services Committee is instrumental in producing the annual defense authorization bill, which covers the breadth of the operations of the Department of Defense. The annual national defense budget involves millions of military and civilian personnel, thousands of facilities, and hundreds of agencies, departments, and commands located throughout the world.

The Subcommittees of the U.S. House Armed Services Committee are: Subcommittee on Air and Land Forces; Subcommittee on emerging threats and capabilities; Subcommittee on Personnel; Subcommittee on readiness and management support; Subcommittee on sea power; and the Subcommittee on strategic forces.

Given the unique nature of national security issues and the related foresight of armed forces, the specific responsibilities of the Armed Services Committee are subject to the emergence of unforeseen events that may alter and complicate the oversight agenda. The committee fully expects that this type of event driven oversight will continue to be required. Currently the Armed Services Committee is paying particular attention to how the Department of Defense continues to adapt to irregular warfare. The three most important sectors being discussed are Afghanistan, Iraq, and Pakistan.

The security situation in Iraq remains inextricably linked to a complex and evolving political situation in that country. The committee will monitor political developments in Iraq, such as the forthcoming elections, in order to gauge their effect on the security situation and both the requirements for U.S. forces and how they are employed. The committee will address such issues as: redeployment timelines within the scope of the mandate, including continued logistical support for military and civilian personnel remaining in theater.

The committee will continue its oversight of the broad range of security issues involving Pakistan, and in particular, will carefully review the use of Coalition Support Funds provided to reimburse Pakistan for its support to U.S. military operations. The committee will also focus on Department of Defense assistance provided to train and equip the Pakistan Frontier Corps to combat terrorism in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas and assistance provided to train and equip the Pakistan Army.

On Wednesday December 2, Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Sec of State Hillary Clinton and Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff Michael Mullen will testify before the house armed services committee regarding Obama窶冱 plan to increase troop levels in Iraq. This month, while under questioning by the House Armed Services Committee, a Congressional Budget Office expert couldn't say how much it costs to run the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
