Committee Info
Hello Senators and welcome to the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. The Foreign Relations committee is charged with administering policy for foreign affairs-related agencies, such as the US Department of State, the US Agency for International Development, the Millennium Challenge Corporation, and the Peace Corps. The committee review and votes on diplomatic nominations, international treaties, and all legislation relevant to US foreign policy (http://foreign.senate.gov/)
In March 2007, Robert Levinson disappeared in Iran while investigating a cigarette-smuggling case. Mr. Levinson is a former Federal Bureau of Investigation agent and a US citizen. While the government of Iran has denied any involvement in his disappearance, the American government has reason to believe he is being held in a secret government-run prison (as Secretary Clinton stated in her address on the issue). Congress is urging international cooperation while pressing forward with a resolution demanding an adequate response from Iranian officials.
Recently, the Senate has acted on a resolution, sponsored by Sen. Robert Casey (D-PA), commending the efforts of Charter 08, a Chinese political and human rights movement. Participants in this movement have demanded that the Chinese government take steps to democratize and to ease restrictions on freedom of speech and other perceived expressions of dissent. The resolution further resolves that President Obama and Secretary Clinton take steps to engage China on these matters of human rights.
The committee also recently discussed a resolution, sponsored by Sen. David Vitter (R-LA), encouraging American solidarity with Israel as it combats Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and other terrorist organizations. The resolution goes on to call for heightened participation by neighboring Arab states to oppose terrorism and to pursue regional peace.
