Committee Info

Description

Hello representatives and welcome to the Blue House Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. This committee is responsible for transitioning our economy away from dependency on foreign oil and countering the increasing threat of global warming.

The 15-person committee is made up of nine democrats and six republicans. The committee has no legislative jurisdiction, and seeks only to investigate and develop recommendations on policies intended to reduce the dependence of the US on foreign energy sources and substantially reduce global warming.

Recently, the Energy Independence and Global Warming Committee has made strides in passing legislation to combat global warming. In June 2009, the American Clean Energy and Security Act was passed. This act established a cap-and-trade system for greenhouse gases. Under the provisions of the bill, the government sets a national limit for these greenhouse gases and then firms are free to trade permits to emit these gases. The bill was authored by Henry Waxman (D – CA) and committee chairman Edward Markey (D-MA).

Hi, I’m Melissa Goldstein and I am a sophomore in the College of Arts and Sciences. I am majoring in history with a minor in Legal Studies. I’m from Westchester, NY and went to high school at Horace Mann. I only started my model congress career last year, but I quickly became a big fan, and cannot wait for this year’s conference. In addition to Model Congress, I play on women’s club tennis and am a tour guide. If you have any questions or need help feel free to email me at mgolds@sas.upenn.edu. I look forward to meeting all of you and conducting some great debate on the most pressing environmental issues!

My name is Michael Tischler and I’m a freshman at Penn. I’m in Penn’s Life Sciences and Management Program, a dual degree program between the Life Sciences department of Penn’s College of Arts and Sciences and The Wharton School. I’m from Long Island, New York, and attended Jericho High School, where I was a delegate for the model congress team. I even came to Penn MC my sophomore year. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or need any help with your bill. My email is mtis@wharton.upenn.edu. I look forward to meeting you.
